Students of the Accra Academy and Accra Wesley Girls Senior High Schools were treated to a day of entertainment and learning through fun as the German Language Association, Verein Deutsche Sprache (VDS), celebrated the 3rd German Language day with a series of lectures and presentations to the German clubs in both schools over the weekend.
The programme, which is held annually by the VDS is meant to strengthen the cultural and bilateral relations between Ghana and Germany with primary focus on developing the youth’s interest in the German language and culture.
Two staff members of the Goethe Institut, Kenny Lartey and Kenneth Inkum, excited the students at the Accra Academy Lectures Theatre where the event was held, as they exhibited their versatility in the German language by singing a hiphop song entitled wärst Du immer noch da, which means “Would you still be there” originally done by German star Bushido. They also performed other songs in German as the crowd applauded their entertaining prowess and fluency in the foreign language.
There was a dance competition between students of Accra Academy and Wesley Girls which Wesley Girls won, as well as quizzes on German topics. The students were also shown documentaries about German culture and history such as the history of the Berlin Wall and its aftermaths, famous German inventions and their inventors, attractive tourist sites and political figures in Germany.

A lecture on the German language structure and its history was delivered by the Ghanaian Director of the German Language Association, Hayford Anyidoho, who did not only teach comprehensively but made the students laugh whiles learning.
According to Mr. Anyidoho, the Germany-Ghana exchange programme, which started in 2008, has benefitted German clubs in Keta Senior High School in the Volta Region, Accra School Complex at Pig Farm, Achimota Secondary school among others in the Greater Accra Region. “There are plans to expand the programme across the country as the years roll by” Anyidoho told this writer.

He said through the programme, many students from the participating schools have had the opportunity to travel to Germany on exchange programmes to learn more about Germany and connect with students from other countries.

After the presentation in Accra Academy the organising Team, made of Cindy E. N. Nubuor , Assistant in the Library and the culture department of the Goethe-Institut Ghana, Kenny Smiles LARTEY, Assistant Teacher of German at the Goethe-Institut, Kenneth Inkum , Hayford A. Anyidoho, Country Director of the Verein Deutsche Sprache (Association German Language) , visited the Volta Region , where they also held the event on the 15th October 2011, at Keta Secondary school. Achimota secondary school is expected to come on board on the coming 22 october 2011. So far over 150 People have participated in this year’s celebration of the German Language days in Ghana. Over 50 participants are still expected in the last section in Achimota.
